John Adams best described the revolution when he said: But what do we mean by the American Revolution? Do we mean the American war? The Revolution was effected before the war commenced. The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people...This radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments, and affections of the people, was the real American Revolution. Thus, The American Revolution was fought to sustain a economic, political and social order. In order to understand what The American Revolution was, we must first look at some of the preexisting conditions of the colonies. The economy of Colonial America were divided into three distinct parts: New England, an area where the economy was predominately commerce; the South, an area where cash crops were the major economic order; and the middle colonies, a region that was a mix of both. |
