ELECTORAL COLLEGEThe electoral college is a confusing way of conducting an election. It is a method that has confused me, and many other people for quite some time. The amount of electoral votes that each state is worth depends on how many people that state has in the House of Representatives and then add the two senators. So for instance Maine has 4 electoral votes as compared to Californa's 54. In 48 states and in the District of Columbia it is winner take all. Meaning that all the votes these places are worth will go to one candidate. Maine and Nebraska are unique, because the votes they are worth can indeed be split up among the candidates. Many people argue that this is the way each state should work. Many people also disagree. The electoral college has snubbed the overall popular vote winner three times in nations history. In my mind a democracy should run in a manner that would be majority rules. Popular vote would be the best way to choose our nation's leaders. If not the best way, than at least fairest way. |
